Q-tof Instrument

A Q-tof instrument, or quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer, is an analytical platform that measures the mass-to-charge ratios of ions to identify and characterize molecules. It first uses a quadrupole to transmit or select ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio, then fragments selected ions through collision-induced dissociation; the resulting ions are separated in a time-of-flight analyzer based on how quickly they reach the detector. In biology, Q-tof instruments support high-resolution proteomics, metabolomics, peptide sequencing, and biomolecule identification, providing accurate molecular-mass measurements and structural information from complex samples.

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

2023

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is a mass spectrometry ion source ideal for the analysis of biomolecules. Instead of ionizing compounds in the gaseous state, samples are embedded in a matrix, which is struck by a laser. The matrix absorbs the majority of the energy; some of this energy is then transferred to the sample, which ionizes as a result. Sample ions can then be identified using a time-of-flight analyzer (TOF). This video covers principles of MALDI-TOF, including...

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and molecular techniques (16S rRNA gene sequencing) permit the identification of rare bacterial pathogens in routine diagnostics. The goal of this protocol lies in the combination of both techniques which leads to more accurate and reliable data.

Effective research relies on specialized instruments that help collect and analyze data precisely. These tools, which include surveys, interviews, observation checklists, focus groups, and mechanical devices, are each designed to capture specific types of information crucial for informed decision-making. Surveys, for instance, are commonly used to gather broad insights from large populations, such as determining public opinion on educational policies. Interviews, on the other hand, play a...
