Species-specific Behaviors

Species-specific behaviors are characteristic patterns of activity, communication, feeding, reproduction, or defense that distinguish one species from another and support survival in particular environments. They arise through interactions between inherited traits, development, learning, and environmental cues, with sensory systems and nervous-system processes shaping how organisms respond to resources, predators, mates, and members of their own species. Studying these behaviors helps biologists distinguish normal species traits from individual variation and understand adaptation, ecological relationships, and evolutionary change. Behavioral observations also inform conservation, animal welfare, habitat management, and research on how environmental disruption affects populations.

2016

Detection and isolation of clinically relevant Vibrio species require selective and differential culture media. This study evaluated the ability of a new chromogenic medium to detect and identify V. parahaemolyticus and other related species. The new medium was found to have better sensitivity and specificity than the conventional medium.

Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Assays for the Species-specific Detection of Eimeria that Infect Chickens

2015

Diagnosis of Eimeria infection in chickens remains demanding. Parasite morphology- and host pathology-led approaches are commonly inconclusive, while molecular approaches based on PCR have proven demanding in cost and expertise. The aim of this protocol is to establish loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) as a straightforward molecular diagnostic for eimerian infection.

Species Distribution and Biogeography - Concepts

2019

Species Distribution Biogeography is the study of species distribution across geographic space and the processes that shape these distributions. This discipline is based on the assumption that each species within a location must have immigrated from another geographic area or evolved from a local species. Within each habitat, a variety of biotic and abiotic factors act on individual species to shape birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates. To avoid local extinction, the combined birth...

Using a Comparative Species Approach to Investigate the Neurobiology of Paternal Responses

The comparative species approach allows behavioral neuroscientists to explore various neurobiological factors associated with specific behaviors viewed as characteristic of a specific animal model. Taking advantage of naturally occurring differences in behavior between closely related species, this technique doesn’t require invasive techniques to manipulate the expression of the behavior.
