Animal Acclimatization

Animal acclimatization is the gradual, usually reversible adjustment of an animal’s physiology and behavior to changing environmental conditions, making it important for survival, welfare, and reliable biological research. Through processes such as altered metabolic activity, thermoregulation, ventilation, water balance, and feeding behavior, animals respond over time to factors including temperature, oxygen availability, salinity, light, and habitat changes. Understanding acclimatization helps researchers distinguish environmental responses from experimental effects and supports the humane care of animals in laboratories, zoos, and conservation programs. It also informs studies of adaptation, climate change, species distribution, and the successful movement of animals between habitats.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Transporting rodents for research requires procedures that minimize stress and maintain animal welfare during movement to minimize the influence on experimental outcomes. Transport cages should provide adequate ventilation,...

Form and Function of Crickets and Crayfish ExpandNOTE: To observe the relationship between form and function in animals, you will be examining and dissecting a cricket and a crayfish. Each pair of students will receive one of each of these organisms. When dissecting, be sure to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, and safety goggles. Take care when handling dissecting tools, as they may be sharp. HYPOTHESES: In this experiment, the experimental hypothesis could be that the cricket and crayfish have...
