Thin Film Sensor

A thin film sensor is a device that uses a microscale or nanoscale material layer to detect changes in its surrounding environment, offering compact and sensitive measurements for biological research. When a target molecule, ion, temperature change, or other stimulus interacts with the film, it alters an electrical, optical, mechanical, or chemical property that the device converts into a measurable signal. In biology, thin film sensors can support detection of biomolecules, monitoring of cellular environments, and analysis of physiological conditions. Their small size, adaptable materials, and potential for real-time measurement make them valuable for biosensing, diagnostic technologies, and integration into wearable or implantable systems.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

We describe an electrochemical sensor assay method for rapid bacterial detection and identification. The assay involves a sensor array functionalized with DNA oligonucleotide capture probes for ribosomal RNA (rRNA) species-specific sequences. Sandwich hybridization of target rRNA with the capture probe and a horseradish peroxidase-linked DNA oligonucleotide detector probe produces a measurable amperometric current.

Glovebox and Impurity Sensors

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University The glovebox provides a straightforward means to handle air- and moisture-sensitive solids and liquids. The glovebox is what it sounds like: a box with gloves attached to one or more sides, which allows the user to perform manipulations within the glovebox under an inert atmosphere. For manipulations under inert atmospheres, chemists can choose between Schlenk or high-vacuum techniques and a glovebox. Schlenk and...
