Uterus Histology

Uterus histology is the microscopic study of uterine tissues, their organization, and their cellular changes, providing a foundation for understanding reproduction and disease. It examines the three principal layers of the uterine wall: the endometrium, a glandular and stromal mucosa; the myometrium, composed of smooth muscle; and the perimetrium, an outer serosal covering. Hormonal signals coordinate cyclical changes in endometrial glands, stroma, and blood vessels, preparing the tissue for implantation and regulating menstruation. In biology and reproductive research, histological analysis helps identify normal uterine architecture, explain pregnancy-related remodeling, and recognize tissue alterations associated with infertility, inflammation, or tumors.

Histology of the Uterus

The uterine wall consists of three histological layers: the perimetrium, myometrium, and endometrium. The outermost perimetrium is a thin, serous membrane connected with the broad ligament on the sides, which helps anchor the uterus in the pelvic cavity. The thickest layer, myometrium, is mainly made up of smooth muscle tissue bundles. Its contractions are vital in facilitating the expulsion of the uterine lining, fetus, and placenta during menstruation and childbirth. The endometrium is the...

Uterus and Cervix

The uterus, commonly called the womb, is a vital reproductive organ in females designed to provide a nurturing environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. It is shaped like a hollow pear and positioned between the urinary bladder and the rectum. The uterus's structure allows it to support and protect a developing fetus throughout pregnancy. The uterus is securely anchored within the pelvic cavity by paired broad ligaments on either side. It is further stabilized by three pairs of...

This protocol describes a technique to assess changes in the maternal vasculature during pregnancy in mice. Using stereological methods, remodeling of the decidual spiral arteries is assessed quantitatively and the results confirmed qualitatively using immunohistochemistry.

Histological Staining of Neural Tissue

In order to examine the cellular, structural and molecular layout of tissues and organs, researchers use a method known as histological staining. In this technique, a tissue of interest is preserved using chemical fixatives and sectioned, or cut into very thin slices. A variety of staining techniques are then applied to provide contrast to the visually uniform sections. In the study of neuroanatomy, histological techniques are frequently applied to visualize and study nervous system tissue.

Histological Sample Preparation for Light Microscopy

2023

Histology is the study of cells and tissues, which is typically aided by the use of a light microscope. The preparation of histological samples can vary greatly based on the inherent properties of the samples such as size and hardness as well as expected post-processing which includes planned staining techniques or other down-stream applications. As described in this video, specimen preparation typically begins with a fixation procedure to prevent degradation of the sample by naturally...
