Serial Fraction Collection

Serial fraction collection is a method for dividing a flowing sample into a sequence of separately labeled portions as components emerge over time from a separation system. In cancer research, a fraction collector uses timed intervals or detector-triggered switching to direct successive eluate volumes into individual wells or tubes, preserving differences in retention and concentration. Researchers can then screen fractions for cytotoxicity, protein or metabolite content, bioactivity, or other cancer-relevant signals, linking an observed effect to a chemical or molecular fraction. This workflow supports purification, biomarker characterization, and activity-guided identification of candidate therapeutic compounds.

Fractional Distillation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

Serial Position Effect

2025

The serial position effect is a cognitive phenomenon where individuals are more likely to recall the first and last items in a list compared to those in the middle. This effect is divided into the primacy effect and the recency effect. The primacy effect is observed when the initial items in a list are remembered better. This occurs because these items are rehearsed more frequently or receive more elaborative processing, allowing them to be encoded into long-term memory more effectively. For...
