Edge Protector Design

Edge protector design is the deliberate engineering of molecular or material features that shield chemically active, mechanically vulnerable, or electrically exposed edges from unwanted reactions or degradation. In chemistry, protection can arise through steric shielding, electronic passivation, selective functionalization, or formation of a stable coating that limits contact with reagents, solvents, oxygen, or charge carriers while preserving the desired surface function. These design principles help control reactivity and improve stability in catalysts, nanomaterials, electrodes, and protective coatings. Understanding how edge structure, composition, and environment influence performance supports more selective synthesis, longer-lived materials, and improved control of interfacial chemical processes.

Group Design

2020

The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between the two are due to...

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...

The protocol presents a novel stepwise approach to producing a pinna-edge biopsy (PEB) in post-natal day (PND) 7 mice for the purpose of identification and simultaneous genotyping.

Zebrafish Larvae as a Model to Evaluate Potential Radiosensitizers or Protectors

2022

The zebrafish has recently been exploited as a model to validate potential radiation modifiers. The present protocol describes the detailed steps to use zebrafish embryos for radiation-based screening experiments and some observational approaches to evaluate the effect of different treatments and radiation.

From Theory to Design: The Role of Creativity in Designing Experiments

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University Research studies come into being when a researcher speculates about human thought, emotions, or behavior, and has a theory that offers a potential explanation. Often the researcher’s theory is firmly situated in everyday common experiences that may not naturally lend themselves to direct empirical study. For example, researchers speculated that perception of a person on Facebook is influenced by...
