Factor Label Method

The factor-label method is a systematic approach for converting quantities between units while preserving their numerical value, making it an essential problem-solving tool in chemistry. It works by multiplying a measured quantity by one or more conversion factors, written as ratios equal to one, so unwanted units cancel and the desired unit remains. Chemists use this method to convert mass, volume, amount of substance, concentration, and other measurements, often linking calculations through molar mass, density, or balanced-equation relationships. By organizing units explicitly, the method helps prevent conversion errors and supports accurate stoichiometric calculations in laboratory and research settings.

Two Methods of Heterokaryon Formation to Discover HCV Restriction Factors

We describe two methods for conditional trans-complementation of hepatitis C virus (HCV) assembly and the completion of the full viral life cycle, which rely on heterokaryon formation. These techniques are suitable to screen for cell lines that express dominant restriction factors, which preclude production of infectious HCV progeny.

A Simple and Efficient Method to Detect Nuclear Factor Activation in Human Neutrophils by Flow Cytometry

Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocytes in blood. Neutrophils possess transcriptionally regulated functions such as production of proinflammatory cytokines and inhibition of apoptosis. These functions can be studied with the method presented here, which allows detection and quantification of nuclear factors by flow cytometry in isolated...

Transcription Factors

Tissue-specific transcription factors contribute to diverse cellular functions in mammals. For example, the gene for beta globin, a major component of hemoglobin, is present in all cells of the body. However, it is only expressed in red blood cells because the transcription factors that can bind to the promoter sequences of the beta globin gene are only expressed in these cells. Tissue-specific transcription factors also ensure that mutations in these factors may impair only the function of...
