Laser Fluence Measurement

Laser fluence measurement is the determination of optical energy delivered per unit area, typically expressed in joules per square centimeter, and is essential for controlling how strongly a laser interacts with matter. It works by measuring pulse energy with a calibrated detector or energy meter, determining the illuminated beam area, and calculating fluence as energy divided by area; beam-profile measurements can reveal spatial variations across the spot. In chemistry, accurate fluence values support reproducible photochemical reactions, laser-induced fluorescence, ablation, and material processing. Reliable measurements help researchers compare experiments, control reaction conditions, and identify energy thresholds for chemical and physical transformations.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.
