Metal Ion Complexation

Metal ion complexation is the formation of a coordination compound when a metal ion binds one or more molecules or ions called ligands, a process that influences chemical behavior in solution and solid materials. As Lewis acids, metal ions accept electron pairs from Lewis-basic donor atoms, creating coordinate covalent bonds; ligand denticity, geometry, charge, and chelation affect complex stability and speciation. Chemists use complexation to control solubility, separate and identify metal ions, and perform quantitative analyses such as titrations. It also helps explain metal transport, catalysis, and reactivity in biological systems, while supporting applications in environmental monitoring, medicine, and materials chemistry.

Formation of Complex Ions

A type of Lewis acid-base chemistry involves the formation of a complex ion (or a coordination complex) comprising a central atom, typically a transition metal cation, surrounded by ions or molecules called ligands. These ligands can be neutral molecules like H2O or NH3, or ions such as CN− or OH−. Often, the ligands act as Lewis bases, donating a pair of electrons to the central atom. These types of Lewis acid-base reactions are examples of a broad subdiscipline called coordination...

Source: Corey Burns, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Paddlewheel complexes are a class of compounds comprised of two metal ions (1st, 2nd, or 3rd row transition metals) held in proximity by four bridging ligands (most commonly formamidinates or carboxylates) (Figure 1). Varying the identity of the metal ion and the bridging ligand provides access to large families of paddlewheel complexes. The structure of paddlewheel complexes allows for metal-metal bonding,...
