Oil Water Microemulsion

An oil-water microemulsion is a clear, thermodynamically stable dispersion of oil and water stabilized by surfactants, often with a cosurfactant. Surfactant molecules accumulate at the oil-water interface, lowering interfacial tension and enabling nanoscale oil-in-water or water-in-oil domains to form spontaneously under suitable composition and temperature conditions. In chemistry, these systems provide controlled environments for solubilization, interfacial reactions, extraction, and the preparation of materials with tailored particle sizes. Their stability and capacity to incorporate both polar and nonpolar compounds also support applications in formulations, catalysis, and chemical delivery systems.

2016

This manuscript describes a simple and high-throughput method for assembling water-soluble proteins with hydrophobic pigments that is based on water-in-oil emulsions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in the assembly of native chlorophylls with four variants of recombinant water-soluble-chlorophyll binding proteins (WSCPs) of Brassica plants expressed in E. coli.

The low-energy water-accommodated fraction (LEWAF) of crude oil is a challenging system to analyze, because over time, this complex mixture undergoes chemical transformations. This protocol illustrates methods for the preparation of the LEWAF sample and for performing photo-irradiation and chemical analysis by trapped ion mobility spectrometry–FT-ICR MS.
