Polystyrene

Polystyrene is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer formed from styrene monomers and valued for its low cost, light weight, and tunable physical properties. It is commonly produced through addition polymerization, often by a free-radical mechanism in which reactive centers link styrene molecules into carbon-chain backbones; molecular weight, tacticity, and processing conditions influence stiffness, transparency, and thermal behavior. In chemistry, polystyrene provides a model for studying polymerization, polymer structure, and structure-property relationships, while its foamed form supplies lightweight insulation and protective packaging. Understanding its synthesis and degradation supports improved recycling, material design, and development of lower-impact alternatives.

Tissue complexities of multicellular systems confound the identification of causal relationship between extracellular cues and individual cellular behaviors. Here, we present a method to study the direct link between contact-dependent cues and division axes using C. elegans embryo blastomeres and adhesive polystyrene beads.
