Carbon Nitrogen Systems

Carbon nitrogen systems describe the coordinated chemical and metabolic pathways that move carbon skeletons and nitrogen-containing compounds through living organisms. In human metabolism, amino acids link these elements: their carbon structures enter energy-producing pathways, while amino groups are transferred or removed and ultimately converted to urea for nitrogen excretion. Clinical researchers use this framework to interpret protein turnover, nutritional status, and metabolic responses in conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, or energy balance. Understanding carbon-nitrogen interactions also supports investigation of amino acid metabolism, nitrogen balance, and metabolic disorders, helping connect biochemical changes with patient health and treatment outcomes.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

Long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers were fabricated based on the pyrolysis of a natural product, human hair. The two fabrication steps of carbon microelectromechanical and carbon nanoelectromechanical systems, or C-MEMS and C-NEMS, are: (i) photolithography of a carbon-rich polymer precursor and (ii) pyrolysis of the patterned polymer precursor.

Synthesis and Functionalization of Nitrogen-doped Carbon Nanotube Cups with Gold Nanoparticles as Cork Stoppers

We discussed the synthesis of individual graphitic nanocups using a series of techniques including chemical vapor deposition, acid oxidation and probe-tip sonication. By citrate reduction of HAuCl4, the graphitic nanocups were effectively corked with gold nanoparticles due to the chemically reactive edges of the cups.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...
