Glutaraldehyde

Glutaraldehyde is a dialdehyde chemical compound used in clinical and laboratory settings as a high-level disinfectant, sterilant, and tissue fixative. Its two reactive aldehyde groups form covalent cross-links with amino groups in proteins and other cellular components, disrupting microbial structure and function while preserving tissue architecture. In healthcare, glutaraldehyde-based solutions are used to reprocess heat-sensitive instruments, including some endoscopic equipment, and in histology to stabilize specimens for microscopic examination. Because its effectiveness depends on concentration, exposure time, and contact with organic material, proper handling and ventilation are essential due to its irritant and sensitizing properties.

A Paper-Based Immunoassay for the Detection of Immunoglobulin G

2025

The video demonstrates a paper-based immunoassay, involving amine-functionalized cellulose discs cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. Covalent immobilization of IgG-Fc-specific capture antibodies, followed by the introduction of immunoglobulin G and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated detection antibodies, results in a color change confirming the presence of immunoglobulin G.

Exosome Block Preparation: A Protocol to Preserve Exosomes From Cultured Human Colon Cancer Cells

In this manuscript, periodate oxidation and glutaraldehyde cross-linking methods for covalent immobilization of antibodies on paper discs are presented. The binding activity of immobilized antibodies was evaluated. Based on these results, a glutaraldehyde cross-linking method was used to develop a novel paper-based immunoassay for immunoglobulin G (IgG) detection.
