Premature Ventricular Complexes

Premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) are early heartbeats that originate in the ventricles rather than the sinoatrial node, making them a common finding in clinical cardiology and an important clue to cardiac electrical activity. They occur when an ectopic ventricular focus depolarizes before the next expected sinus impulse, producing a typically wide, abnormal QRS complex and often a pause before the rhythm resumes. PVCs may be isolated or frequent and can occur without structural heart disease, but a high burden or symptoms such as palpitations may warrant evaluation for underlying cardiac disorders. Electrocardiography, ambulatory monitoring, and imaging help guide risk assessment and management.

Modeling Posthemorrhagic Hydrocephalus of Prematurity in Rats

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity (PHHP) can be modeled in neonatal rats by combining chorioamnionitis and intraventricular hemorrhage. The combination of these prenatal and postnatal events accurately recapitulates the clinical hallmarks of PHHP, including macrocephaly, ventriculomegaly, and elevated intracranial pressure, through the lifespan.

Modeling Encephalopathy of Prematurity Using Prenatal Hypoxia-ischemia with Intra-amniotic Lipopolysaccharide in Rats

Encephalopathy of prematurity encompasses the central nervous system abnormalities associated with injury from preterm birth. This report describes a clinically relevant rat model of in utero transient systemic hypoxia-ischemia and intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide administration (LPS) that mimics chorioamnionitis, and the related impact of infectious stimuli and placental underperfusion on CNS development.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Assessment of Right Ventricular Function in the Piglet

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) and Right Ventricular (RV) dysfunction were induced in piglets by progressive obstruction of the pulmonary arteries. Consequences were remarkably similar to those observed in CTEPH patients. This animal model would be a very useful tool for pathophysiology and therapeutic experiments on CTEPH and RV failure.

Isolation and Kv Channel Recordings in Murine Atrial and Ventricular Cardiomyocytes

Kv channel dysfunction is associated with cardiac arrhythmias. In order to study the molecular mechanisms that lead to such arrhythmias we utilize a systematic protocol for isolation of atrial and ventricular cardiomyocytes from Kv channel ancillary subunit knockout mice. Isolated cardiomyocytes can then immediately be used for cellular electrophysiological studies, biochemical or immunofluorescence (IF) assays.
