Prostate Anatomy

Prostate anatomy describes the structure, location, and relationships of the prostate gland, a walnut-sized organ that contributes to male reproductive and urinary function. Situated below the bladder and surrounding the proximal urethra, the prostate contains glandular tissue, ducts, connective tissue, and smooth muscle; its epithelial cells produce prostatic fluid, while smooth muscle contraction helps propel secretions into the urethra during ejaculation. Understanding these features supports clinical evaluation of benign prostatic enlargement, prostatitis, and prostate cancer, in which changes in gland size, tissue organization, or neighboring structures can affect urinary flow, sexual function, imaging interpretation, biopsy, and surgical planning.

2023

This video describes a technique to harvest individual lobes from the prostate gland of a mouse model. Individual lobes can then be used for histological analysis and cancer research.

Extracting Prostate from Mouse Urogenital System: A Technique to Separate Prostate Gland from Other Urinary and Genital System Organs in Male Mouse

2023

In this video, we describe the procedure for the dissection of the urogenital system or UGS from a male mouse model. This UGS is further dissected ex vivo to isolate the prostate gland and study its role in prostate cancer development.

We describe the manufacture of compressed hormone pellets, as well as subcutaneous surgical implantation into mice. This strategy can be combined with the growth of cell and tissue xenografts under the renal capsule of athymic nude mice to evaluate hormonal carcinogenesis and regulation of benign prostate growth.

This manuscript describes the protocols for prostate micro-dissection and surgical castration in the laboratory mouse. We also depict representative results produced by these protocols. Finally, we discuss the advantages and utilization of these protocols.

Intra-prostatic Injection of Cancer Cells: A Technique to Deliver Cancer Cells for Establishing Orthotopic Prostate Cancer Mouse Model

2023

In this video, we demonstrate the procedure for administering intra-prostatic injection of prostate cancer cells into a mouse model. Orthotopic murine models can be used to study the disease origin and response to treatment therapies in a non-invasive and clinically relevant environment.
