Heterologous Ivf

Heterologous IVF is an in vitro fertilization approach that combines sperm and oocytes from different species or genetically distinct sources to examine cross-species reproductive compatibility. The process depends on gamete recognition, including sperm binding to and penetrating the zona pellucida, the acrosome reaction, membrane fusion, and, when compatible, activation of oocyte development. In developmental biology, heterologous IVF helps researchers investigate species-specific fertilization barriers, gamete interaction, and early embryonic development. It can also provide experimental evidence about reproductive isolation, conservation strategies, and the molecular factors that determine whether fertilization proceeds across biological boundaries.
