Retinal Differentiation Media

Retinal differentiation media are specialized cell-culture formulations that guide stem cells or neural progenitors toward retinal cell fates, providing a controlled model of early eye development. Their activity depends on carefully balanced nutrients, growth factors, signaling molecules, and culture conditions that regulate lineage specification, proliferation, and maturation over defined developmental stages. In developmental biology, these media support the generation of retinal organoids and populations such as photoreceptors, retinal ganglion cells, and other neural retinal cells. The resulting models help researchers investigate retinal development, study disease mechanisms, evaluate candidate therapies, and assess how genetic or environmental changes affect tissue formation.

This protocol describes how to produce retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) from pluripotent stem cells. The method uses a combination of growth factors and small molecules to direct the differentiation of stem cells into immature RPE in fourteen days and mature, functional RPE after three months.

Blaize1, Elizabeth Suter1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Prokaryotic cells are able to inhabit nearly every environment on this planet. As a kingdom, they possess a great metabolic diversity, allowing them to use a wide variety of molecules for energy generation (1). Therefore, when cultivating these organisms in the lab, all necessary and specific molecules required to make energy must be...
