Aortic Sinus

The aortic sinus is a set of three pouch-like expansions at the root of the aorta, positioned behind the aortic valve leaflets and central to efficient cardiovascular flow. As blood leaves the left ventricle, the sinuses shape local vortices that help separate the valve leaflets during systole, promote their closure during diastole, and direct blood toward the coronary arteries. In engineering, aortic sinus geometry informs computational fluid dynamics, biomimetic valve design, and cardiovascular device development. Studying its dimensions and flow patterns can improve prosthetic valve performance, reduce abnormal stresses, and support safer designs for patients with aortic disease.

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video provides an overview of sinus, nose, and throat examinations. The demonstration begins with a brief overview of the anatomy of the region. The upper third of the nose is bony, and the bottom two-thirds are cartilaginous. Air entering the nares passes through the nasal vestibules and into the narrow passageway between the nasal septum...

Establishment of a Modified Ferric Chloride-Induced Superior Sagittal Sinus Thrombosis

Angiogenesis, the sprouting of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is associated with both natural and pathological processes. Here we demonstrate an aortic ring assay that allows angiogenic potentiators and inhibitors to be directly added to aortic rings in culture. Sprouting and neovessel outgrowth can be determined by inspecting the aortic rings over a period of 6-12 days.
