Experimental Rating Procedure

An Experimental Rating Procedure is a systematic method for evaluating and ranking an engineering system, material, component, or design through controlled testing. It establishes performance criteria, applies defined rating scales to measured observations, and uses repeated trials or comparative benchmarks to convert experimental results into consistent scores. Engineers use these procedures to compare alternatives, assess reliability, identify performance limits, and support design decisions. By linking ratings to reproducible test conditions and quantitative evidence, the method improves transparency and reduces subjective judgment in product evaluation, quality control, and research. Well-designed procedures also provide a basis for validating models and refining future experiments.

2010

Ion mobility-mass spectrometry is an emerging gas-phase technology that separates ions, based on their collision cross-section and mass. The method provides three-dimensional information on the overall topology and shape of protein complexes. Here, we outline a basic procedure for instrument setting and optimization, calibration of drift times, and data interpretation.

Rate-Determining Steps

2020

Relating Reaction Mechanisms In a multistep reaction mechanism, one of the elementary steps progresses significantly slower than the others. This slowest step is called the rate-limiting step (or rate-determining step). A reaction cannot proceed faster than its slowest step, and hence, the rate-determining step limits the overall reaction rate. The concept of rate-determining step can be understood from the analogy of a 4-lane freeway with a short-stretch of traffic-bottleneck caused due to...
