Gas Absorption Isotherm

A gas absorption isotherm describes the equilibrium relationship between the amount of a gas dissolved in a liquid and its partial pressure at a constant temperature. It reflects gas–liquid partitioning: at low concentrations, solubility often follows Henry’s law, while interactions between the gas and solvent can produce nonlinear behavior or chemical absorption. Engineers use absorption isotherms to characterize solvent performance, estimate equilibrium conditions, and design equipment such as packed columns, scrubbers, and gas-separation units. These relationships also support process optimization by linking temperature, pressure, solvent selection, and achievable removal of target gases.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

A protocol for high-temperature and high-pressure gas adsorption measurements on zeolite H-ZSM-5 using an adsorption measurement device based on a langatate crystal microbalance is presented. Prior to the adsorption measurements, the synthesis of zeolite H-ZSM-5 on the langatate crystal microbalance sensor by the steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method is demonstrated.

Isothermal Processes

A thermodynamic process that occurs at constant temperature is called an isothermal process. Heat slowly flows into the system or out of the system to maintain thermal equilibrium. Processes involving phase changes like water evaporation into steam or freezing water into ice at a constant temperature are examples of Isothermal Processes. An ideal gas can also undergo isothermal expansion or compression. For example, consider 1 mole of an ideal gas inside an isolated cylinder at initial volume V...

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Bacterial Gene Detection

Source: Domesle, K. J., et al. Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Screening Salmonella in Animal Food and Confirming Salmonella from Culture Isolation. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique for detecting a target bacterial gene by amplifying DNA at a constant temperature. The reaction mixture is prepared by adding an isothermal master mix, specific primers for the target gene, and samples containing DNA templates. The...
