Hygral Changes

Hygral changes are moisture-induced changes in the dimensions or shape of hygroscopic materials, especially wood and wood-based products, and they are important for predicting performance in engineering applications. As relative humidity changes, the material adsorbs or desorbs water, causing swelling or shrinkage below the fiber saturation point; because these changes differ along and across the grain, they can produce warping, cracking, and internal stress. Understanding hygral changes supports timber design, dimensional stability assessment, moisture control, and the development of durable building components. Monitoring humidity and accounting for anisotropic movement helps engineers reduce failure and maintain structural and functional performance.

Contactless Co-Culture Assays for Morphometric Studies During Inter-Species Interactions in Fungi

2026

Two contactless co-culture approaches are described for qualitative and quantitative assessment of fungal morphological responses during inter-species interactions. The protocol demonstrates how intrinsic factors influence hyphal growth, using a Candida inter-species assay as an example. These methods can be easily adapted to investigate microbial inter-species communication across diverse organisms.
