Lightning Surges

Lightning surges are brief, high-voltage transients caused by nearby or direct lightning strikes, posing serious risks to electrical and electronic systems. A strike can inject large currents into power, communication, or grounding networks, while electromagnetic coupling and rapid changes in the electric field induce additional overvoltages in adjacent conductors. Engineering protection combines grounding, bonding, surge protective devices, shielding, and coordinated insulation levels to divert surge energy and limit residual voltage. Understanding lightning surges supports the design of resilient power grids, buildings, industrial facilities, and communication infrastructure, reducing equipment damage, service interruptions, fire hazards, and safety risks.

Method for Recording Broadband High Resolution Emission Spectra of Laboratory Lightning Arcs

2019

Emission spectroscopy techniques have traditionally been used to analyze inherently random lightning arcs occurring in nature. In this paper, a method developed to obtain the emission spectroscopy from reproducible lightning arcs generated within a laboratory environment is described.

Degassing Liquids with Freeze-Pump-Thaw Cycling

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neil Branda — Simon Fraser University Degassing refers to the process by which dissolved gases are removed from a liquid. The presence of dissolved gases such as oxygen or carbon dioxide can impede chemical reactions that utilize sensitive reagents, interfere with spectroscopic measurements, or can induce unwanted bubble formation. A number of different techniques are available for degassing liquids; some of these include heating, ultrasonic agitation, chemical...

Electrical Safety

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Here, we describe how to identify the stage of the murine reproductive (proestrus, estrus, metestrus, or diestrus) by simple, non-invasive collection and cytological assessment of vaginal smear samples. We further describe how vaginal cytology reflects circulating hormonal levels underlying transition through the murine reproductive cycle.

What is Energy?

2020

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...
