Fired Clay

Fired clay is a ceramic material made by shaping natural clay and heating it until physical and chemical changes give it lasting form, strength, and stability. During firing, evaporation and dehydroxylation remove water, while sintering bonds mineral particles; at higher temperatures, partial vitrification reduces porosity and changes mechanical and thermal behavior. In engineering, fired clay is used for bricks, tiles, pipes, laboratory ceramics, and refractory products, where controlled composition, moisture content, firing temperature, and cooling rate determine performance. Understanding these relationships supports durable construction materials and the design of ceramics with tailored porosity, strength, and heat resistance.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Here we describe an adaptation of protocols used to induce homeostatic plasticity in neurons for the study of plasticity of astrocytic G protein-coupled receptors. Recently used to examine changes in astrocytic group I mGluRs in juvenile mice, the method can be applied to measure scaling of various astrocytic GPCRs, in tissue from adult mice in situ and in vivo, and to gain a better appreciation of the sensitivity of astrocytic receptors to changes in neuronal activity.
