Mixed Reality Education

Mixed reality education is an instructional approach that blends physical learning environments with interactive digital content, helping students visualize concepts and practice skills in context. Using head-mounted displays, cameras, and spatial tracking, a system maps the learner’s surroundings and anchors computer-generated models or information to real-world objects, allowing users to manipulate and inspect them from different viewpoints. In engineering, this approach can support three-dimensional design review, equipment training, laboratory simulation, and collaborative problem-solving while reducing dependence on physical prototypes or specialized facilities. By linking abstract theory with spatial, hands-on interaction, mixed reality can strengthen conceptual understanding and provide repeatable experiences for developing technical skills.

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.
