Moisture Resistance

Moisture resistance is an engineering material or system’s ability to limit damage, degradation, or performance loss caused by water, humidity, and water vapor. It works by reducing fluid penetration through dense microstructures, hydrophobic surfaces, protective coatings, barrier films, sealed joints, or carefully selected material interfaces. Engineers evaluate moisture resistance through measures such as water absorption, vapor transmission, swelling, corrosion, and changes in mechanical strength or electrical performance. This property is critical in construction materials, electronics, packaging, textiles, and transportation systems, where controlling moisture can extend service life, preserve functionality, improve reliability, and reduce maintenance under humid or wet conditions.

Robust functional catechol coatings were produced in one step by direct reaction of the material known as HKUST with synthetic catechols under anaerobic conditions. The formation of homogeneous coatings surrounding the entire crystal is ascribed to the biomimetic catalytic activity of Cu(II) dimers on the external surface of the crystals.

Determination of Moisture Content in Soil

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Bradley Schmitz Soils normally contain a finite amount of water, which can be expressed as the “soil moisture content.” This moisture exists within the pore spaces in between soil aggregates (inter-aggregate pore space) and within soil aggregates (intra-aggregate pore space) (Figure 1). Normally this pore space is occupied by air and/or water. If all the pores are occupied by air, the...

Moisture Content and Bulking of Aggregate

2024

The moisture content of aggregates is a crucial factor in construction, particularly in concrete mixing, as it influences the total water required in the mix. Moisture content represents the water coated on the exterior surface of the aggregate existing in a saturated and surface-dry condition. The total water content of a moist aggregate is the sum of its moisture content and water absorption. When aggregates are exposed to rain or sit in stockpiles, they absorb moisture, which must be...
