Oblique Impact

Oblique impact is a collision in which two bodies meet at an angle, producing both normal and tangential components of relative motion. During contact, the normal component generates compression and rebound, while friction and material deformation act on the tangential component, influencing impulse, energy dissipation, and post-impact rotation or sliding. Engineers analyze oblique impact using linear momentum, restitution, contact mechanics, and friction models to predict forces and trajectories. These analyses support the design and evaluation of vehicles, protective structures, robotic systems, sports equipment, and manufacturing processes, helping improve safety, durability, and performance under noncentral loading.

Stress on an Oblique Plane

2024

Understanding stress on an oblique plane under axial loading is pivotal in material mechanics. This analysis offers insight into a material's durability and strength, which is crucial for civil engineering and structural design. Axial loading refers to force application along the material's central axis, causing compression or elongation and leading to normal stress. Normal stress occurs when a force acts perpendicularly to the material's area, resulting in compressive or tensile stress. When...

Impact occurs when two bodies collide, leading to the application of impulsive forces between them. Analyzing impact mechanics involves considering two colliding particles moving along a line known as the line of impact, which passes through their centers and is perpendicular to the contact plane. When particles with different initial velocities collide, they induce deformation by applying equal and opposite impulses. At the point of maximum deformation, the particles move together with...
