Optical Pump Beam

An optical pump beam is a directed beam of light used to supply energy to an optical or photonic system, making it a fundamental component of many laser and engineering devices. When the beam enters an active medium, its photons are absorbed by atoms, ions, molecules, or semiconductor carriers, raising them to higher energy states and, under suitable conditions, creating the population inversion required for stimulated emission. Engineers control the pump beam’s wavelength, power, spatial profile, and alignment to optimize energy transfer. These principles support solid-state and semiconductor lasers, optical amplifiers, spectroscopy, sensing, and nonlinear optical systems.

Large laser-interferometers are being constructed to create a new type of astronomy based on gravitational waves. Their sensitivities, as for many other high-precision experiments, are approaching fundamental noise limits such as the atomic vibration of their components. We are pioneering technologies to overcome these limits using novel laser beam shapes.

Beams are integral components of structural engineering and construction, designed to support loads applied at various points along their length. These long, straight members can be classified based on geometry, cross-section, support type, and equilibrium condition. Based on geometry, beams can be straight, tapered, or curved. Straight beams are the most common type and have a constant cross-section throughout their length. Tapered beams, on the other hand, have a varying cross-section along...
