Sieve Analysis

Sieve analysis is a laboratory method used to determine the particle-size distribution of granular materials, making it essential for evaluating soil, aggregate, sand, and powder characteristics in engineering. The sample passes through a vertical stack of sieves with progressively smaller openings during controlled shaking; particles are separated by size, and the mass retained on each sieve is measured to calculate percentage retained, passing, and gradation. Engineers use these results to classify soils and aggregates, assess uniformity, design concrete and asphalt mixtures, and verify material quality for construction. The method supports decisions about compaction, drainage, permeability, and overall performance.

Sieve Analysis and Grading Curves

2024

Sieve analysis is a method used to determine the particle size distribution of aggregate materials. This process involves the following steps: The required quantity of dried sample of aggregate is weighed. The weighed aggregates are sieved through a set of sieves with square openings arranged in descending order of aperture size, with the largest mesh on top (Column 1 of Table 1). The stack of sieves is shaken or vibrated to facilitate the sorting of particles by size. After sieving for a...

2015

Electrical Penetration Graph (EPG) is a well-established technique for studying the feeding behavior of stylet-bearing insects. Here we show a new application of EPG as a non-invasive tool for the acquisition of intracellular electrophysiology recordings of sieve elements (SEs), the cells that form the phloem vasculature in plants.

Sieving Fruit Pulp to Detect Immature Tephritid Fruit Flies in the Field

2023

Increasing the detection of immature tephritid fruit flies in the field can trigger timely efforts to eliminate populations of these destructive pests. Detecting late instar larvae is faster and more accurate when mushing host fruit in a bag and passing the pulp through a series of sieves than hand cutting and visual inspection.
