Total Station

A total station is an electronic surveying instrument that combines an angle-measuring theodolite, an electronic distance meter, and data-recording or computational functions to determine the positions of points with high precision. It measures horizontal and vertical angles and the slope distance to a target, then uses these observations with instrument height, target height, and coordinate calculations to derive horizontal distances, elevations, and three-dimensional coordinates. In engineering, total stations support topographic surveys, construction layout, deformation monitoring, and as-built documentation, improving the efficiency and consistency of field measurements while reducing manual calculation and transcription errors.

Emergency Eyewash and Shower Stations

2023

Robert M. Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that an emergency eyewash and shower station be easily accessible in all workplaces in which a person could be exposed to injurious and/or corrosive substances. Emergency eyewash and shower stations should be used in the case of a laboratory or workplace accident that involves the spilling of a harmful, possibly corrosive chemical onto the body or the splashing...

Total Fixed, Total Variable, and Total Cost Curves

2024

In the short run, a firm incurs various fixed expenses such as lease payments, insurance premiums, and machinery depreciation. Collectively, these are known as the total fixed cost (TFC) of production. Graphically, TFC is depicted by a straight line parallel to the x-axis, with cost on the vertical axis and the quantity of output on the horizontal axis. Variable costs include expenses that change with the output level, such as materials used and wages of workers paid hourly. Collectively, these...

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is indicated for the treatment of conditions that cannot be treated with conventional arthroplasty or other procedures. These primarily include degenerative and incapacitating conditions with irreparable rotator cuff and loss of the normal biomechanical coupling of the shoulder.

Turbidity and Total Solids in Surface Water

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Turbidity and total solids are related measurements addressing clarity of surface waters. Turbidity is an indirect measure of water clarity that determines the amount of light that can pass through the water. Total solids is a direct measurement of solid particles suspended in water determined by weight. High levels of turbidity and total solids are caused by soil erosion, waste discharge, runoff, or changes in...
