Biorefinery Pipelines

Biorefinery pipelines are integrated sequences of processes that convert renewable biomass into fuels, chemicals, materials, and other valuable products, offering an alternative to petroleum-based manufacturing. They typically move feedstocks through pretreatment, fractionation, biological or thermochemical conversion, separation, and product recovery, with each stage designed to use available biomass components efficiently. In environmental research, these pipelines support the valorization of agricultural residues, organic waste, and other renewable resources while reducing waste and potentially lowering fossil-resource demand. Evaluating material flows, energy use, emissions, and product yields helps researchers improve sustainability and identify practical pathways for circular bioeconomy systems.

Here, we describe several protocols aiming at an integrated valorization of Gracilaria gracilis: wild species harvesting, in-house growth, and extraction of bioactive ingredients. The extracts' antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic effects are evaluated, along with the nutritional and stability assessment of food enriched with whole seaweed biomass and pigments.

A Computational Pipeline for Intergenic/Intragenic Enhancer RNA Quantification in Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells

The signal-to-noise ratio of data is one of the most important considerations in performing X-ray diffraction measurements from microcrystals. The VMXm beamline provides a low-noise environment and microbeam for such experiments. Here, we describe sample preparation methods for mounting and cooling microcrystals for VMXm and other microfocus macromolecular crystallography beamlines.
