Egg Viability Assay

An egg viability assay is a method for determining whether eggs remain alive and capable of normal development, providing a measurable indicator of reproductive success and biological health. The assay typically evaluates developmental progression, structural integrity, movement, or hatching under controlled conditions, often comparing exposed eggs with untreated controls; reduced development or hatching indicates impaired viability. In environmental research, these assays help assess the effects of pollutants, changing water or soil conditions, and other stressors on reproductive stages. Results support toxicity testing, ecological risk assessment, environmental monitoring, and evaluation of conditions that influence population sustainability.

Therapeutic compounds are often first examined in vitro with viability assays. Blind cell counts by a human observer can be highly sensitive to small changes in cell number but do not assess function. Computerized viability assays, as described here, can assess both structure and function in an objective manner.

2023

Drosophila females choose between substrates and select sites that are attractive for egg-laying. This video describes a behavioral assay that tests their decision-making, called the egg-laying preference assay. The featured clip demonstrates the procedure with a custom-built setup, which enables researchers not only to test the behavior of many females at the same time but is also compatible with video recording and optogenetic setups.
