Permanganate Index

The Permanganate Index is a water-quality measure that estimates the amount of oxidizable material in water, providing an indicator of organic pollution and overall chemical cleanliness. In a controlled test, potassium permanganate reacts with reducing substances in a water sample, and the amount consumed is expressed as an oxygen-equivalent value. The result does not identify individual compounds, but it reflects the combined presence of substances that can be chemically oxidized. Environmental laboratories use the index to monitor drinking water, surface water, and wastewater, assess treatment performance, and detect changes in pollution loads.

Oxidation of Alkenes: Syn Dihydroxylation with Potassium Permanganate

2025

Alkenes can be dihydroxylated using potassium permanganate. The method encompasses the reaction of an alkene with a cold, dilute solution of potassium permanganate under basic conditions to form a cis-diol along with a brown precipitate of manganese dioxide. The mechanism begins with the syn addition of a permanganate ion (MnO4−) across the same side of the alkene π bond, forming a cyclic manganate ester intermediate. Next, the hydrolysis of the cyclic ester with water gives a cis-diol with...

Maule Staining for Lignin: A Technique to Characterize Lignin Distribution in Arabidopsis Thaliana Stem Sections

2025

In this video, we describe the Maule staining technique for staining syringyl lignin present in the specialized plant cells. This staining technique helps to characterize the lignin distribution in the xylem and interfascicular fibers.

Solution Concentration and Dilution

The relative amount of a given solution component is known as its concentration. Often, though not always, a solution contains one component with a concentration that is significantly greater than that of all other components. This component is called the solvent and may be viewed as the medium in which the other components are dispersed or dissolved. Solutions in which water is the solvent are, of course, very common on our planet. A solution in which water is the solvent is called an aqueous...

Elastic Fiber Staining of Slide Sections: A Technique to Observe Gastric Cancer Metastasis
