Obesity Induction

Obesity induction is the controlled development of excessive adiposity in an experimental organism to study the biological and genetic factors that regulate body weight. Researchers typically induce obesity through calorie-dense diets, altered feeding conditions, or genetic manipulation, producing sustained energy imbalance through increased energy intake, reduced expenditure, or disrupted appetite signaling. In genetics research, these models help reveal how inherited variants and pathways involving leptin, insulin, adipocyte development, and metabolism influence obesity susceptibility. They also support investigation of gene-environment interactions and evaluation of interventions for metabolic complications associated with increased adiposity.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...
