23s Rrna Mutation

23S rRNA mutations are changes in the bacterial gene encoding 23S ribosomal RNA, a core component of the large ribosomal subunit that supports protein synthesis. By altering the ribosome’s structure or antibiotic-binding sites, these mutations can reduce drug binding and allow translation to continue during antimicrobial exposure; their effects depend on the nucleotide change and bacterial background. In immunology and infection research, identifying 23S rRNA mutations helps explain resistance to ribosome-targeting antibiotics, guide susceptibility testing, track resistant strains, and inform treatment strategies and surveillance of emerging infections.

2023

Source: Ewa Bukowska-Faniband1, Tilde Andersson1, Rolf Lood1 1 Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Division of Infection Medicine, Biomedical Center, Lund University, 221 00 Lund, Sweden Planet Earth is a habitat for millions of bacterial species, each of which has specific characteristics. Identification of bacterial species is widely used in microbial ecology to determine biodiversity of environmental samples and medical microbiology to diagnose infected patients. Bacteria can be classified...

Viral Mutations

2019

A mutation is a change in the sequence of bases of DNA or RNA in a genome. Some mutations occur during replication of the genome due to errors made by the polymerase enzymes that replicate DNA or RNA. Unlike DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase is prone to errors because it is not capable of “proofreading” its work. Viruses with RNA-based genomes, like HIV, therefore accrue mutations faster than viruses with DNA-based genomes. Because mutation and recombination provide the raw material for adaptive...

This manuscript describes a detailed standardized protocol of high-throughput 16S rRNA-amplicon sequencing. The protocol introduces an integrated, uniformed, feasible, and inexpensive protocol starting from fecal sample collection through data analyses. This protocol enables analysis of large numbers of samples with rigorous standards and several controls.
