Infrarenal Aorta

The infrarenal aorta is the segment of the abdominal aorta located below the renal arteries, supplying oxygenated blood to the pelvis and lower limbs. Its wall withstands continuous pulsatile pressure, while endothelial injury, altered blood flow, and immune-cell recruitment can promote inflammation and structural weakening in conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysm. In immunology and infection research, this region is examined in studies of inflammatory aortitis, vascular remodeling, and infected aneurysms, where microbial invasion or dysregulated host responses may damage the vessel wall. Understanding these processes supports earlier diagnosis, risk assessment, and development of targeted vascular therapies.

2023

Source: Gurneet S. Sangha and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that utilizes light generated acoustic waves to obtain compositional information from tissue. PAT can be used to image blood and lipid components, which is useful for a wide variety of applications, including cardiovascular and tumor imaging. Currently used imaging techniques have inherent...

Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of re-endothelialization following arterial denudation injury is of paramount importance in preventing thrombosis and restenosis of arteries. Here we describe a protocol for reproducible arterial denudation injury of the infrarenal abdominal aorta. The procedure was developed to investigate the underlying mechanisms that regulate endothelial regeneration using mouse models.

Porcine Aorta Isolation: A Surgical Procedure to Excise the Thoracic Aorta From Miniature Pigs for Downstream Analysis
