Lateral Flow Device

A lateral flow device is a portable paper-based diagnostic platform that rapidly detects a target substance in a liquid sample, making it valuable for decentralized testing. As the sample moves by capillary action along a membrane, labeled particles bind specifically to the target and accumulate at capture lines, producing a visible signal when the target is present. In immunology and infection research, these devices commonly use antigen-antibody interactions to identify pathogen proteins or host antibodies in specimens such as blood, saliva, or nasal fluid. Their low cost, simple operation, and rapid results support screening, outbreak response, and point-of-care testing, although analytical sensitivity may be lower than laboratory-based assays.

A rapid and accurate point-of-care test for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is presented. It takes advantage of lateral-flow technology using a specific monoclonal antibody that binds to an Aspergillus antigen secreted during pulmonary infections. The assay is compatible with serum and brochoalveolar lavage and represents a novel adjunct test for disease diagnosis.

Generating a Mouse Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Using a Lateral Fluid Percussion Device

2025

The video demonstrates a method to generate a mouse model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) using a lateral fluid percussion device (LFPI). Upon anesthetizing the mouse, the brain is exposed by creating a window on the skull. A saline-filled cannula is attached to the window and is then connected to the LFPI. The pendulum of the device is released to create a pressure pulse that inflicts a traumatic brain injury.

Induction of Traumatic Brain Injury in a Rat Model Using a Lateral Fluid Percussion Device

This video demonstrates the induction of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a rat using a lateral fluid percussion injury (FPI) device. The procedure involves creating a hole in the skull of an anesthetized rat to expose the dura mater, onto which a cannula is attached. The rat is then connected to the device, which generates a pressure wave that reaches the brain, mimicking TBI by causing neural cell death and vascular...

Microfluidic double emulsions generation typically involves devices with patterned wettability or custom-fabricated glass components. Here we describe the fabrication and testing of an all polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double emulsion generator that does not require surface treatment or complicated fabrication processes, and is capable of producing double emulsions down to 14 µm.
