Oropharyngeal Candidiasis

Oropharyngeal candidiasis is a fungal infection of the mouth and throat caused by overgrowth of Candida species, making it an important model of mucosal immunity and opportunistic infection. It develops when changes in local immune defenses or microbial balance allow Candida, particularly Candida albicans, to adhere to epithelial surfaces, form hyphae and biofilms, and trigger inflammation. Clinically, the infection commonly produces removable white plaques, soreness, and difficulty swallowing, especially in individuals with impaired immunity or altered oral conditions. Studying oropharyngeal candidiasis supports diagnosis and antifungal treatment while clarifying how epithelial barriers, innate immune cells, and microbial communities limit fungal colonization.

Although Candida infection models are available to study host immune resistance, a model to study T cell mediated immunopathology in the context of Candida infection is absent. Here we describe a method to establish Th17 immunopathology associated with oral Candida infection in immunodeficient mice.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic species of Candida. It can affect various anatomical sites, including the skin, oral cavity, nails, and genitourinary tract. Among its forms, vaginal candidiasis is the most common type of mucosal infection. It typically results from the overgrowth of Candida albicans in the vaginal mucosa. Under normal conditions, C. albicans exists as a commensal organism within the vaginal microbiota, regulated by the dominance of lactobacilli, which...

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway

In preparing for oropharyngeal airway suctioning, a nurse must gather all necessary equipment, including a suction unit with tubing, a prepackaged suction kit, sterile gloves, water or saline for irrigation, a water-soluble lubricant, and additional personal protective equipment (such as a gown, mask, and goggles) to control infections. After assembling the equipment, the nurse should practice hand hygiene and don appropriate PPE according to infection control guidelines to avoid the...
