Ozone Exposure

Ozone exposure is contact with ozone, a reactive form of oxygen found in polluted outdoor air and capable of affecting respiratory and immune function. When inhaled, ozone reacts with airway-lining fluids, lipids, and proteins, generating oxidative stress that activates inflammatory signaling and can alter epithelial barriers, innate immune responses, and antimicrobial defenses. In immunology and infection research, controlled exposure models help clarify how air pollution influences susceptibility to respiratory pathogens, disease severity, and recovery. This work informs public-health standards and supports investigation of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other strategies to reduce ozone-related harm.

Measuring Tropospheric Ozone

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Ozone is a form of elemental oxygen (O3), a molecule of three oxygen atoms bonded in a structure that is highly reactive as an oxidizing agent. Ozone occurs in both the stratosphere and the troposphere levels of the atmosphere. When in the stratosphere (located approximately 10-50 km from the earth’s surface), ozone molecules form to the ozone layer and help prevent harmful UV rays from reaching Earth’s surface. In...

In Vivo Assessment of Alveolar Macrophage Efferocytosis Following Ozone Exposure

This manuscript describes a protocol for determining whether exposure to ozone, a criteria air pollutant, impairs alveolar macrophage efferocytosis in vivo. This protocol utilizes commonly used reagents and techniques and can be adapted to multiple models of pulmonary injury to determine effects on alveolar macrophage efferocytosis.

Developing a Salivary Antibody Multiplex Immunoassay to Measure Human Exposure to Environmental Pathogens

In the current climate of scarce resources, new technologies are emerging that allow researchers to conduct studies cheaper, faster and with more precision. Here we describe the development of a bead-based salivary antibody multiplex immunoassay to measure human exposure to multiple environmental pathogens simultaneously.
