Q-switched Laser

A Q-switched laser is a pulsed laser that releases stored optical energy in extremely short, high-intensity bursts, making it valuable for precise material and tissue interactions. Its Q-switch temporarily prevents lasing while the gain medium accumulates energy, then rapidly opens the cavity to produce nanosecond pulses that generate strong photothermal and photoacoustic effects. In immunology and infection research, these pulses can drive photoacoustic imaging, characterize pigments and biomaterials, and selectively disrupt or analyze biological structures. Such capabilities help visualize inflammation, assess infected tissues, and investigate pathogen-associated components while limiting energy exposure to surrounding material.

Switching of BJT

2024

Switching behavior in Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) is a fundamental aspect utilized in various electronic circuits, particularly for digital logic applications like switches and amplifiers. In a typical switching circuit, a BJT alternates between cut-off and saturation modes, corresponding to the "off" and "on" states, respectively, thus behaving like an ideal switch. Cut-off Mode ("Off" State): In this state, both the emitter-base and collector-base junctions are reverse-biased. The...

2010

Following antigen exposure, subpopulations of activated B cells undergo a process known as class switch recombination (CSR) to produce antibody isotypes with distinct effector functions. The protocol outlined in this report explains how CSR can be induced and analyzed in vitro for the purposes of studying B cell function.

Automation of Mode Locking in a Nonlinear Polarization Rotation Fiber Laser through Output Polarization Measurements

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

An In Vitro System to Study Tumor Dormancy and the Switch to Metastatic Growth

A modified 3-D in vitro system is presented in which growth characteristics of several tumor cell lines in reconstituted basement membrane correlate with the dormant or proliferative behavior of the tumor cells at a metastatic secondary site in vivo.

Measuring the Switch Cost of Smartphone Use While Walking

2020

This study design measures the task-switching cost of using a smartphone while walking. Participants undergo two experimental conditions: a control condition (walking) and a multitasking condition (texting while walking). Participants switch between these tasks and a direction determining task. EEG data as well as behavioral measures are recorded.
