Tape-fish Method

The Tape-FISH method is a fluorescence in situ hybridization technique that uses an adhesive tape substrate to collect, immobilize, and visualize microorganisms or cells while preserving their spatial organization. After fixation, fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes hybridize with complementary nucleic acid sequences, often ribosomal RNA, allowing target cells to be identified by fluorescence microscopy. In immunology and infection research, this approach can map microbial localization within complex samples, distinguish related organisms, and examine host-associated communities or biofilms. Its spatially resolved readout supports studies of microbial interactions, infection niches, and changes in community structure under experimental conditions.

Errors in Taping

2025

Errors in taping arise from multiple factors that can significantly impact measurement accuracy in surveying. Misalignment of the tape, often due to human error, is one primary source. A skilled rear tapeman, using a telescope, can help correct alignment by guiding the head tapeman; however, human limitations still lead to small inaccuracies. These errors may include misplacement of pins or inaccurate tape readings due to common visual confusions, such as mistaking a six for a nine. Such...

Osmoregulation in Fishes

When cells are placed in a hypotonic (low-salt) fluid, they can swell and burst. Meanwhile, cells in a hypertonic solution—with a higher salt concentration—can shrivel and die. How do fish cells avoid these gruesome fates in hypotonic freshwater or hypertonic seawater environments? Fish employ osmoregulatory strategies to balance bodily levels of water and dissolved ions (i.e., solutes), such as sodium and chloride. Imagine two solutions separated by a membrane that is permeable to water.

Distance Measurements by Taping

Tapes are essential in surveying for accurate, durable, and short-distance measurements. Made from lightweight, nylon-coated steel, they offer flexibility and strength for rugged outdoor use. The nylon coating protects against rust and wear, extending the tape's life. Standard lengths, around 30 meters, are marked in meters and millimeters for precision.Surveyors select tapes based on site conditions and accuracy needs. Lightweight, nylon-coated tapes are commonly used for ease of handling and...
