Ascending Colon

The ascending colon is the first major segment of the colon, extending from the cecum upward along the right side of the abdomen to the hepatic flexure. As intestinal contents move through this relatively proximal region, the epithelium reclaims water and electrolytes while resident microbiota metabolize remaining material; mucus, epithelial barriers, and immune cells help limit contact between microbes and host tissues. In immunology and infection research, the ascending colon is important for studying gut microbial communities, mucosal immune defenses, pathogen colonization, and inflammation. Its anatomy and physiology also inform investigations of gastrointestinal disease and host-microbe interactions.

Ascending Aortic Constriction in Rats for Creation of Pressure Overload Cardiac Hypertrophy Model

We describe a stepwise procedure for creating pressure overload and left ventricular hypertrophy in Wistar rats by constriction of the ascending aorta using a small metallic clip. This model is extensively used for studying remodeling changes during cardiac hypertrophy and for identifying and evaluating strategies for regression of such changes.

Electrophysiological Recording from Colonic Afferent Nerves in an Ex Vivo Rat Colon

This video demonstrates a method to record the activity of colonic afferent nerves in an ex-vivo rat colon, cannulated at both ends and infused with saline to increase intraluminal pressure. As pressure increases, the nerve signal rises, indicating its stimulation.

2010

The Colon Ascendens Stent Peritonitis (CASP) is a highly standardized model for polymicrobial abdominal sepsis in rodents. This article describes the surgical procedure of CASP. The CASP model and its variants allow the systematic investigation of various problems concerning the subject of sepsis.

Modeling Ascending Vaginal Infection, Preterm Birth, and Neonatal Morbidity in Mice

2025

Preterm birth (delivery < 37 weeks) is an urgent global health issue with suboptimal prevention and treatment options. We present a mouse model of ascending vaginal bacterial infection-induced preterm birth and outline how to analyze the resulting neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Hematoxylin and Eosin Staining to Assess Colon Damage in DSS-Induced Colitis

2025

This video demonstrates the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining method to evaluate colon damage in a murine model of DSS-induced colitis — an inflammatory bowel disease. Upon isolating the colon from a DSS-treated mouse and obtaining sections of the tissue, H&E staining of the sections helps identify the inflammation-mediated tissue damage.
