Leading Term

The leading term of a polynomial is the term with the highest exponent, and it determines the polynomial’s degree and much of its behavior for large values of the variable. Its coefficient and exponent reveal how the function grows, while the coefficient’s sign helps establish the end behavior of its graph. In algebra, identifying the leading term supports polynomial classification, comparison, simplification, and estimation. It also provides a foundation for asymptotic analysis, where the leading term approximates a function when lower-degree terms become relatively insignificant, making it useful in calculus, modeling, and numerical reasoning.

In Vitro Calcium Imaging in Short-Term and Long-Term Rat Hippocampal Cultures

Source: Calvo-Rodríguez, et al. Fluorescence and Bioluminescence Imaging of Subcellular Ca2+ in Aged Hippocampal Neurons. J. Vis. Exp. (2015). This video demonstrates the use of fluorescence imaging to measure cytosolic calcium levels in short-term and long-term rat hippocampal cultures. By comparing young and aged neurons, it highlights how increased L-type voltage-gated calcium channel density and prolonged activation in aged neurons result in calcium overloading, a hallmark of neuronal aging.

Lead Analysis of Soil Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Lead occurs naturally in soil, in levels ranging from 10-50 ppm. However, with the widespread use of lead in paint and gasoline in addition to contamination by industry, urban soils often have concentrations of lead significantly greater than background levels – up to 10,000 ppm in some places. Ongoing problems arise from the fact that lead does not biodegrade, and instead remains in the soil. Serious health risks...

Long-term Depression

2019

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. Calcium Ion Concentration Mechanism If over time, all...

Phase-lead and Phase-lag Controllers

Understanding the working function of different types of controllers can be illustrated with practical analogies, such as adjusting a stereo's volume equalizer. Cranking up the bass involves a phase-lead controller, which functions as a high-pass filter, while increasing the treble uses a phase-lag controller, which acts as a low-pass filter. PD controllers, similar to high-pass filters, enhance the system's response to high-frequency components. PI controllers, akin to low-pass filters, manage...

We present an ECG protocol that is technically easy, inexpensive, fast, and affordable in small mice, and can be performed with enhanced sensitivity. We suggest this method as a screening approach for studying pharmacological agents, genetic modifications, and disease models in mice.
