Alternating Interface Strategy

Alternating Interface Strategy is a design approach that creates or regulates a material by repeatedly changing the interactions presented at its interfaces, making interfacial behavior a controllable feature rather than a fixed property. The strategy typically relies on sequential or alternating assembly steps in which different surface chemistries, layers, or molecular components are introduced under defined conditions to produce a structured interface. In medicine, this approach can support the development of biomaterials, coatings, membranes, and drug-delivery systems with tunable adhesion, permeability, biocompatibility, or release behavior. Controlling interfaces in this way may improve material performance and help tailor devices to specific biological environments.

Alternative Strategy to Analyze In Vitro Cell Invasion of 3D Cultures

2024

Invasion is a major biological phenomenon in the development and progression of cancer. This process is influenced by non-neoplastic cells and components of the tumor microenvironment. The purpose of this study is to describe an alternative method for analyzing tumor cell invasion in vitro using three-dimensional (3D) cultures.

Here, we describe a single cell micro-aspiration method for the separation of infected amoebae. In order to separate viral subpopulations in Vermamoeba vermiformis infected by Faustoviruses and unknown giant viruses, we developed the protocol detailed below and demonstrated its ability to separate two low-abundance novel giant viruses.

Protein-protein Interfaces

2020

Many proteins form complexes to carry out their functions, making protein-protein interactions (PPIs) essential for an organism's survival. Most PPIs are stabilized by numerous weak noncovalent chemical forces. The physical shape of the interfaces determines the way two proteins interact. Many globular proteins have closely-matching shapes on their surfaces, which form a large number of weak bonds. Additionally, many PPIs occur between two helices or between a surface cleft and a polypeptide...

Alternative RNA Splicing

2020

Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity. There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...
