Cancer Treatment Lung Injury

Cancer treatment lung injury refers to damage to pulmonary tissue caused by anticancer therapies, including radiation, chemotherapy, targeted drugs, and immunotherapy, and can limit treatment or threaten respiratory function. These injuries develop when therapy triggers inflammation, immune-mediated alveolar damage, vascular changes, or progressive scarring, producing conditions such as pneumonitis and interstitial lung disease. Clinicians assess new cough, breathlessness, oxygenation, imaging findings, and pulmonary function while distinguishing treatment toxicity from infection or tumor progression. Early recognition supports therapy adjustment and appropriate management, helping preserve lung function and maintain effective cancer care. Research continues to identify risk factors and biomarkers for safer, more personalized treatment.

2016

We describe a method for the detection of tumor nodule development in the lungs of an adenocarcinoma mouse model using micro-computed tomography and its use for monitoring changes in nodule size over time and in response to treatment. The accuracy of the assessment was confirmed with end-point histological quantification.

Detection of Targetable Alterations in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer using Next-generation Sequencing

2025

This protocol describes an automated, ISO15189-accredited next-generation sequencing workflow for detecting targetable genomic alterations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues.

Development of a Neonatal Piglet Acute Lung Injury Model Recreating the Early Environment of Preterm Infant Lungs

2025

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.
