Clinical Efficacy Assessment

Clinical efficacy assessment is the systematic evaluation of how well a medical intervention produces a desired health outcome under defined clinical conditions. It typically compares treatment and control groups using prespecified endpoints, standardized protocols, and statistical analysis to determine whether observed benefits exceed expected variation or placebo effects. In medicine, efficacy assessments support clinical trial design, regulatory decisions, treatment selection, and evidence-based care by measuring outcomes such as symptom improvement, disease control, or survival. Careful assessment also clarifies which patient populations benefit, identifies limitations in the evidence, and guides further research on safety, effectiveness, and implementation.

We describe methods for longitudinal monitoring of the efficacy of therapeutics for the treatment of colonic pathologies in mice using a rigid endoscope. This protocol can be readily used for the characterization of the therapeutic response of an individual tumor in live mice and also for monitoring potential disease relapse.

Environmental enrichment provides a potential protective effect against neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, however, there is no easy way of determining the efficacy of enrichment procedures. This protocol describes a simple “Puzzle Box” method for assessing an animal’s cognitive function, in order to reveal the effectiveness of environmental enrichment.
