Coronary Balloon Occlusion

Coronary balloon occlusion is a catheter-based technique that temporarily blocks blood flow through a coronary artery or selected vessel segment, enabling controlled assessment or treatment during cardiovascular procedures. A balloon mounted on a catheter is positioned under imaging guidance and inflated to appose the arterial wall, producing short-term interruption of perfusion; deflation restores flow. Clinicians and researchers use this method to evaluate myocardial ischemia, assess collateral circulation, control bleeding in selected situations, or support other interventional procedures. Because occlusion can provoke ischemic injury or rhythm disturbances, its duration, location, and physiological effects require careful monitoring.

Animal models of atherosclerosis are essential to understand the mechanism and to investigate newer approaches to prevent plaque development or rupture, a leading cause of death in the industrialized world. This protocol uses a combination of balloon injury and cholesterol rich diet to induce atherosclerotic plaques in rabbit iliac artery.

Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is useful for assessment of myocardial oxygen demand and evaluation of cardiovascular risk. This study establishes a step-by-step transthoracic Doppler echocardiographic (TTDE) method for longitudinal monitoring of the changes in CFR, as measured from coronary artery in mice, under the experimental pressure overload of aortic banding.
