Coin Ingestion Detection

Coin ingestion detection is the medical process of identifying a swallowed coin, locating it within the aerodigestive tract, and determining whether it requires urgent treatment. Clinicians typically begin with a history and physical examination, then use frontal and lateral neck or chest radiographs to distinguish a coin in the esophagus from one in the airway and assess its position; imaging can also help differentiate a coin from a button battery, which poses greater risk. Accurate detection guides observation, endoscopic removal, or emergency airway management, reducing complications such as obstruction, perforation, and aspiration, especially in children.
