Corneal Nerve Quantification

Corneal nerve quantification is the measurement of nerve density, length, branching, and morphology in the cornea, providing objective indicators of corneal health and neural injury. Typically, high-resolution in vivo confocal microscopy captures images of the subbasal nerve plexus, which are then analyzed manually or with image-processing algorithms to trace nerve fibers and calculate structural metrics. These measurements help assess diabetic peripheral neuropathy, neurotrophic keratopathy, ocular surface disease, and nerve recovery after surgery or injury. By linking microscopic nerve changes with sensory function and disease progression, corneal nerve quantification supports diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and research into corneal nerve regeneration.

Corneal Donor Tissue Preparation for Endothelial Keratoplasty

2012

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.
