Endoscopic Discectomy

Endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive spinal procedure that removes herniated or degenerated disc material compressing a nerve root, helping relieve radicular pain and neurological symptoms. Through a small incision, a surgeon advances an endoscope to visualize the affected disc and uses specialized instruments to extract the offending tissue while limiting disruption to surrounding muscles and structures. The technique is used primarily for selected lumbar disc herniations and can provide effective nerve decompression with less tissue trauma and potentially faster recovery than open surgery. Its success depends on accurate diagnosis, appropriate patient selection, and careful management of spinal anatomy.

Source: Wang, L., et.al. Full-Endoscopic Isolation Zone Technique for the Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation. J. Vis. Exp.(2023)This video demonstrates a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to treat lumbar disc herniation by removing the protruded nucleus pulposus and ruptured annulus fibrosus. The technique decompresses the affected nerve root, alleviates pain, and restores nerve function through targeted tissue resection and radiofrequency modulation.
